The effective use of multiple medias on the wiki

There are many types of media that can incorporated into a wiki. These medias include videos, text, hyperlinks, images and other Web 2.0 applications. The key is using these medias effectively on a wiki so that people (and students) can take them all in and understand them. If, for example, a page contains images and videos all over the place, it will be difficult for anyone to understand them and observe their quality.

The above image is a link to teacher tube, a special version of youtube - for teachers. Teacher tube contains videos that are especially useful in the classroom for teachers. Above is an example of using images and hyperlinks. I doubt that all students would read this entire page of just plain text with a link to TeacherTube in the middle, and then just follow the link. A nice, fair sized image in the middle of the page is much more eye-catching.

Rather than just showing these videos to the whole class with a projector - which is still certainly one acceptable way - the teacher could place the video up on the class wiki and then students could view this in class, and then again at home. This is a huge advantage when wikis and videos are combined. The only downside to this is that not all students will have broadband at home, and therefore may not be able to view the video at home (or it will take a significant amount of time to load).

Here is an example of embedding a TeacherTube (or YouTube) video onto a pbwiki page. This clip is about Web 2.0.

YouTube plugin error

It is essential that multimedia used in a wiki is well structured, and not just placed all over the page. There should be text to accompany multimedia to explain its purpose if needed.
